The Oregon Seed Council will be offering three college scholarships this year in the amounts of $2,000, $1,000 and $500. These scholarships will be for students who have had a connection with the seed industry, without regard to what they plan on studying in the future – a way to reward past service to the industry as someone potentially starts a new career path. This doesn’t mean a student wanting to study in crop science or agri-business isn’t eligible; it just opens the pool of applicants to a broader audience.
A scholarship committee will review applications, conducting interviews and choosing the scholarship recipients.
The scholarship will be available for college bound students who come from a farm involved in seed production, have worked on a seed farm or have worked for a seed company. High school seniors, home school seniors or current college students are eligible. Past winners are encouraged to apply. Applications must include responses to a questionnaire, an essay of less than 500 words describing why the student deserves the scholarship, and three letters of reference.
The complete eligibility rules can be found on the Oregon Seed Council website. Students interested in applying are encouraged to go to oregonseedcouncil.org under the “Info” tab http://www.oregonseedcouncil.org/info/ for the rules and scholarship application. Applications are due March 1, 2020.
